Topic:
Dennis Sparks' Position Statement

Message:

Successful staff development improves student learning. It is based on student learning data, and its effect on student learning is continuously assessed. For the most part, this staff development focuses on deepening teachers' understanding of the subjects they teach and the methods they use in teaching it. This learning is sustained, intellectually rigorous, and classroom focused.

Successful staff development requires both individual learning on the part of teachers, administrators, and other school employees, as well as cultural and structural changes that support adult learning and collaborative work. Schools in which all teachers and students learn and perform at high levels require that school board members and all school employees are learning virtually all the time.
