Topic:
Julie Young: Alternative Programs

Message:

"To thrive in today's world and tomorrow's work place, America's students must learn how to learn, learn how to think and have a solid understanding of how technology works and what it can do." These are the opening words presented in the 1997 School Technology and Readiness Report (StaR) published by the CEO Forum on Education and Technology. To address the needs of tomorrow's workplace, for three years The Florida High School has developed and implemented an Internet-based online high school to serve students in the state of Florida.

The Florida On-line High School's goal is to develop a foundation of knowledge and skills that enables students to live productive and rewarding lives. Given the "any time, any place, any path, any pace" philosophy of the school, an asynchronous delivery system gives students a real-world learning environment, available 24 hours a day seven days a week.

Within this alternative educational program, students in remote areas have access to courses not otherwise available. For example, a high school had two of their seven seniors complete and pass three FHS advanced placement courses. This school along with other schools offered courses that historically were unavailable. In addition, across the state, students in large high schools resolve scheduling conflicts with FHS courses. As we continue to expand beyond the borders of Florida, many students will have access to learning opportunities to meet their educational goals and increase their learning potential.
