Posted by: Topic: Message: It is important for school leaders to know the technology proficiency level of their teachers in order to plan professional development, develop school technology plans, understand what they can expect with regard to technology integration, and know what kinds of support systems they need to put in place. There are a number of instruments that have been developed that can help with this. In my state of North Carolina, the Department of Public Instruction has made available a self-report instrument tied to our teacher technology competencies.
There are increasing numbers of on-line self-report instruments that assess teachers' technology skills and how they are using technology in the schools. The Principals' Executive Program, in partnership with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, SAS, and BellSouth, have developed TAGLIT (http://www.peptaglit.org/taglit/default.htm), a suite of on-line instruments and reports described briefly in Question 1. TAGLIT will be available for use by states that are funded with a Bill and Melinda Gates challenge grant for technology leadership.
The TAGLIT assessment leads to two reports. The preliminary TAGLIT report includes:
Narrative responses to the guiding questions can be entered on-line. The final TAGLIT report includes the same information as included in the preliminary report, with the addition of the analysis offered by the principal.
