A Team Effort

It is very helpful if administrators understand the importance of integrating technology and will support the funding of such technology. For instance, I knew a teacher who wanted a classroom set of graphing calculators and Calculator-Based Laboratories (hand-held data collection devices) for his high school physics and chemistry classroom. The principal recognized the priority of this need and made sure that the funds were allocated for that purpose.

Of course, it might also be necessary to provide teachers with professional development opportunities in which they can learn more about how to effectively integrate such technology. There are too many instances of equipment being made available to teachers who have no expertise with the equipment, and so the equipment remains untouched. Provision of mentors who do have expertise and can systematically help the teachers can be very important and can be an extension of the professional development inservice training sessions.

Sometimes parent meetings are helpful to instruct parents in the appropriate use of technology and to show them how it is essential in today's society. Showing actual examples of how technology can be used to enhance learning helps to dispel claims that technology is a crutch.

In summary, the best way to help teachers incorporate technology is to provide teachers with equipment and quality instruction on how to use the equipment in ways that enhance student learning.
