Topic:
More Research on Tech & Early Ed is Needed

Message:
The question about whether computers are good for young children is a very good one, and I think it warrants more research done on the topic. I have mixed emotions about the use of technology with young children. As the grandmother of two boys aged 2 and 5, I limit their time on the computer to a half hour. We primarily use living books and drawing software. It is great for eye-hand coordination and the development of fine and gross motor skills. The 2-year-old can actually manipulate the mouse and knows how to insert and remove CDs.

The major concern I have is centered on the patterns that young children need to develop. This needs to be done in the tactile, hands-on environment and not on a machine. Patterning at eight and under is quite important. Additionally, whatever is used in technology with the younger child should be developmentally appropriate.

David Elkind, Professor of Child Development at Tufts University, has been an advocate for developmentally appropriate programs children for quite a while and I fall into this category as well. Children eight and under also need to develop socialization skills and this can only be done with the "human touch". A music teacher once told me that there are many students who have moved right to rhythm without ever learning the beat. I worry about what impact too much technology can have on the young child, so I veer on the side of caution. Whether this has a detrimental effect can only be learned over time through research.
