Greek Art - Greece Quest

This past year, my students & I particapated in Classroom Connect's Greece Quest. Our Social Studies curriculum was to cover Ancient Civilizations and discover how they did or did not influence our present culture. Ancient Greek civilization was not something I was all to familiar with, but with the help of this project - I did not need to be. One thing that really brought this home was the Ancient Greek statues - they are all naked. I thought that might be a tough thing to get through with 10yr olds, but what we all learned was the reason for their nakedness (to show the human body in its perfect form - as created by the gods). We continued to study the Ancient Greeks for 3 more weeks and not one time did the students even flinch at the graphic statues, they even began to notice other features specific to Greek carvings. At the end of the unit, some students created an i-Movie to sum up the 'adventure' and of course there were some pictures of the statues. And would you believe it was the adults now that had a problem with the nakedness and asked to have the pictures removed. Hmm... I could not have taught that without technology, I am just not that knowledgable in all areas.
