Topic:
Success Has Different Definitions

Message:
From my own experience, special education personnel are often the last to explore "out of the box" technology solutions for students. We need to change the way we view success for all and realize that success has different definitions. For one student it may mean more time, for another it may mean fewer problems, and for still another it may mean the assistance of a device, such as a text processor or laptop. Assignments and test should be a consideration for students having certain disabilities. In some schools, this is viewed as elitism and is not allowed.

Physical access and the equity that this engenders is another issue. As the computer to student ratio becomes more equitable, this issue loses its importance. Home access is a separate issue - but how much are schools responsible for, anyhow? Some schools have written grants to provide low-income families with technology in the home. Is that where we're headed?
