Topic: Flexibility - The Best Benefit
Message: Some students will only read what they believe you can test them on and will avoid other reading materials. However, in class participation the instructor can "test" a student on anything simply by creating a question on the spot, tailor-made for that person. Ultimately, we are here to guide them and enhance the skills they possess and not become discouraged by the lack of skills or thought provoking questions. The best benefit is flexibility.
I have been studying Spanish and often feel my students regard English as a foreign language. English is not the same in different areas of the United States, nor is it the same generationally, therefore if I try to learn new slang terms and use them well they begin to learn what we have entitled "SAT vocabulary". This trade off is best demonstrated in class discussions and they can form an argument in the writing when they have practiced citing their source verbally in the class.
