Topic: All Faculty Must Participate
Message: In making sure that the teacher would be able to integrate literacy school-wide, the total faculty must be willing to participate in this endeavor. First of all, the school administration must be willing to implement school-wide in-service sessions for the entire faculty by department to show them how each discipline can actually incorporate literacy strategies in their content area classes. Just telling teachers will achieve nothing. All too often, content area teachers say, "I am not a reading teacher."
Another avenue would be to hire a full-time reading specialist who would work with each content area teacher on a daily basis to provide the individualized assistance to incorporate reading and the content area. The reading specialist can provide the expertise in reading, while the content area teacher provides the content.
A third avenue would be to provide funding of resources for each department in aiding the teachers to purchase print materials of software that would supplement and complement the content area curriculum.
