Topic: Two Authors Promote Literacy
Message: I have attained the literacy-related benefits that I sought for our students and continue to do so this year with over 1400 students in our building. Students associate reading to a text and do not look at reading as an exploration of the unknown. Enabling students to identify with characters is a requirement. There were two authors who came to our school who enlightened our readers and made them realize not only the importance of being literate, but the ability to connect reading and real-life situations. Clifton Taulbert and Dawn Turner Trice helped me to achieve the benefits of reading for our students. The unexpected benefits were the friendships that developed between myself and the above-mentioned authors. They were not just visiting and moving on, but were very impressed with the caliber of students and the preparation of our students, which was reflected during their visits and interactive sessions. I have remained in contact with both authors and hope that they will be able to return again soon to Stone Mountain High School to promote literacy to a new group of students.
