Topic:
genuine involvement

Message:
I don't have many cautions except that the involvement has to be real. If you want students involved, then it can't be a token involvement. There has to be an understanding that the time and energy put into any discussion or project will bear fruit. Good leadership will seek to create a shared vision among all parties. To have a shared vision, it is first necessary to determine whom you are and where you want to go. I would suggest that a school go through a period of self-reflection and then perform a needs-assessment study before moving into action.

I would also caution the principal to move the school forward in small steps. Early projects or changes in policy should be kept simple so that success is readily achieved. With each success will come an increased sense of empowerment, and that, in turn, will lead to even greater success.
