Welcome to Our Discussion

Message:

As Director of the New England Equity Assistance Center, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to this forum on Culturally Responsive Education. The New England Equity Assistance Center (EAC) works with school districts to ensure equal access to excellent education for all children. Dialogue around Culturally Responsive Education is an integral part of the EAC's mission, as we reach out to educators who work with diverse learners.

We are honored to welcome four expert educators to our discussion, each of whom brings a special voice to the conversation:

  • Sonia Nieto is nationally known for promoting an equity agenda for all children whose voices have not been heard.

  • Joyce Gibson has worked continuously in the area of professional development and leadership for teachers who work in diverse settings.

  • Maria Luisa Wilson-Portuondo is both a practitioner and a professional developer who has dedicated her whole professional career to responsive practice.

  • Kathleen Serverian-Wilmeth is a long-time teacher whose intercultural experience has inspired and enriched the practice of many teachers, students and parents.

We hope to engage many practitioners from across the teaching field in this dialogue. We invite all who are interested or curious to join us in expanding our knowledge base.

Let's begin by inviting our panelists to give us their perspectives on culturally responsive education.
