Standards Can be Directly Taught and Reinforced Informally

Message:
If your art program is balanced, then most likely you are aligning with state and national standards. This is true for choice-based art programs as well as other methods. Within the choice approach, there are many varied opportunities for teaching required concepts and content. The initial meeting time is a good time to cover material that everyone needs to hear. Centers can feature visuals and information in support of important concepts. You can direct students to review this material while they are working. Often, I move from center to center, watching for teachable moments as they emerge.

Copies of both state and national standards sit on my desk and I refer to them often. I know my students are getting plenty of studio experience in varied media and techniques. Because choice-based art education teaches for artistic behavior, we frequently discuss the role of artists. Do we cover enough art history, aesthetics, and related arts disciplines? I ask myself these questions throughout the year for each grade level and then plan accordingly.

While each grade and class may not receive identical experiences, overall they will have reached all of the same outcomes as designated by district and state frameworks. For example, when we discuss artists and art history, students may not always learn about the same artists in each class. This kind of teaching evolves from individual class and student needs. When I can make a connection between students' work and specific artists, the information is far more relevant to my students. Connecting new information to existing knowledge is a constructivist approach which makes learning more meaningful.
