Useful data may take many forms: daily student classroom work, portfolios, attendance and dropout rates, student and parent perceptions, school vandalism costs, and standardized test results, among other sources of information.

Daily student classroom work is arguably the most important among these, because it is essential that teachers see regular improvements in student learning, if they are to sustain their motivation for the use of new techniques and maintain the momentum of the improvement effort. That requires that staff development be sharply focused on the knowledge and skills required to improve student learning. In addition, teachers must acquire, as part of their staff development experiences, the formative classroom assessment skills that enable them on a regular basis to determine their effectiveness in improving student learning on objectives that are important in their classrooms.
