For many teachers, the reality is that state-mandated assessments seem to dictate the mathematical content that is taught. A real challenge is posed by fitting in all the required content while finding time and resources to incorporate varied and ongoing assessment that can inform practice. In addition, use of assessment methods other than traditional quizzes or graded assignments can be time and labor intensive. Finally, some parents and students may not appreciate a move away from traditional grading scales if alternative assessments are used extensively.
