Some of the best ways we have seen to improve literacy throughout the content areas involve teacher/ library media specialist collaborations. I am surprised that Knowledge Loom does not include the library media staff as a member of collaborative teams. He/she is the one person who sees all of the curriculum in the school, who can identify logical connections. A strong, well-funded and well supported school library with a pro-active media specialist makes a huge difference for kids. If the library media specialist can be included on teams - could someone please let me know. I have a librarian who would like to put together a team - but she senses that she (who wuold actually coordinate all of this) is not invited to participate. Please clarify.
Thanks

An activity/assignment that helped my 10th graders really relate to and respond to Catcher in the Rye is the Following:
"You are Holden Caulfield. Write an additional chapter of Catcher in which Holden describes what happens to him when he comes to East Haven High School."
I Explain to them that they have to know Holden's mindset and attitudes. Many find that they have more of a connection wth Holden than they originally admitted when they work on this assignment.

Our high school does several things to promote literacy. We have a school wide writing initiative in which all teachers in every class (PE, shop, auto, history, etc.) have their students do a formal writing four times a year that is then holistically scored by that teacher. Data are analyzed and show improvement in students' writing skills over the two years we have been doing this.

We also have a reading center where students can go to have their reading levels tested, be put on an individualized reading program that will gradually challenge them as they improve, learn how to read more strategically, get free books, have a quiet place to hang out for reading at lunch or after school.

Our reading classes focus on four main elements: the students self-select their books, they read in their own ZPD, they are given time to read, and they are given short bursts of instruction to help them learn to deal with difficult texts like content area textbooks, high level novels, content area vocabulary, poems, and real world reading challenges like job applications, ballot questions, and apartment leases.

We are seeing improvement in many of our readers.

High schools need to create workshops by disciplines which show content area teacher "how to" develop literacy in their subject areas. They could all use the many tried and true good ideas on this very website. I have tried many of the suggestions about grouping and suggestions for increasing meaningful discussion and they work!
