Author: Jeanene Breisch Title: teacher Role: K-12 Classroom teacher Location: East Haven, CT Date: 03-24-03 After reading the novel, Night (a novel about a young boy's experiences during the Holocaust), I have students research current forms of genocide. There are 5 steps to this two week research assignment. The first step is finding a 20th century event of genocide and bringing that information to me. They do this in groups of four. Once they've done this, that group begins researching that event. Each group in the class reasearches different events. Step two of this assignment is for students to research various aspects of the genocide. They must research the history of the country, the event, the world response, pictures and maps, and the connection to the Holocaust. The group usually breaks these parts of the research up so that they only present that research later. For about three days, students finding information from the Internet about this form of genocide. After the three days, they share notes and information so that they can create a "Research Write-Up." These are usually 3 paragraphs long. This write-up is step three of the project. Step four is having students create presentation boards in which they place everything they found as a group on the board. Step five is creating the presentation and presenting the information. Students find this project very eye-opening. They can't believe that genocide happened so frequently and that it continues to happen. It allows students to use all multiple intelligences. |
