A great unit involving a collaborative interdisicplinary use of Technology was: "Volcano Erupts in Foxon!" Foxon is a small community within the greater Town of East Haven. It is in a hilly area a few miles north of the center of town, which is at sea level. The unit was an interdisciplinary one involving Science and Computer classes. Map reading skills were learned and applied, internet research skills were applied, and hypothesis' and conclusions were developed. Using the computer as research tool students went to www.topozone.com, where they could view U.S.G.S. topographical maps of the area of town involved. Using a printed geological map they discovered that indeed in the relatively recent geological past fissures opened and lava had flowed in the area, creating the hills and many of the features thestudents were familiar with. The students were concerned about recent similar events which ocurred in Africa, and they were able to speculate as to what would happen should the same thing happen today in their community. Using topo info they calculated lava flows, determined economic damage, and had fun discovering how to use maps to show a piece of their world.
