I really like the approach that Pauline Joseph has taken in her elementary choice based art class. Too often I think that kids at this level aren't given opportunities that allow them to reach their fullest potential. The set up of Pauline's class strikes me as one that is usually available at the upper grade levels. By providing this mature classroom setting the students are able to learn important lessons such as independence and making decisions that are right for them. In placing them in control the students will be able to find on their own what they enjoy. By giving younger students instruction followed by freedom they are given the chance to gain self confidence which can inspire creativity even in those students who don't think they will like art class.
