What is it?

Adherence to this principle ensures that professional development is relevant. When teachers help design their own learning, they are likely to feel a greater sense of involvement in the professional development experience. Teachers are most likely to use what they learn when professional development is focused on solving problems in their particular contexts.

Questions to Think About

  • We recognize that gaps exist in student learning. Who should be involved in determining the content teachers need to learn in order to close the gaps in student learning? Why?
  • Once professional development content has been determined, what modes or formats of learning provide optimal delivery of that content for effective application? What are the benefits of each particular format?
  • What steps must a leader take to successfully implement participatory development of professional development content and learning activities?
