Extensive evaluations of professional development programs over the last several years document that professional development does increase student achievement. Evaluations of teachers' professional development in algebra instructional strategies, for example, demonstrated an increase in student scores of state assessment from 61% to 81% in a single school year. Application assessments at the end of workshops and training sessions include lesson plans, demonstrations, and teacher and student products. Individual professional development plans, surveys, focus group reports, anecdotal data, and group reflections are other data sources. Both process and product measures related to reaction, learning, behavior, and results are used to conduct formative and summative assessments about professional development.
