Aaron Listhaus is currently the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of The International High School: A Charter School at LaGuardia Community College, located in Queens, in New York City. This alternative high school, which serves limited English proficient high school students who have immigrated within the four yeas of admission, was converted to a Charter school at the invitation of the Chancellor of the New York City School District. International High School has been a Title VII Academic Excellence site, chosen by the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Bilingual and Minority Language Affairs as a model for replication. The school has also been selected as one of 11 schools chosen by the Federal Government as a Model Professional Development School.
Mr. Listhaus, a teacher, has held the elected position of Chairman of The Board of Trustees of The International High School for the last four years. This policy making group is comprised of the stakeholder groups represented in the school, faculty, administration, parents, students and community members. Mr. Listhaus serves on the Steering Committee, which includes the school's administrators and the teachers' union representative. This group is the management team of the school and is responsible for the day to day operation of the school, the follow-through on Board decisions, and policy recommendation for the approval of the Board of Trustees.
Mr. Listhaus, through a committee of elected school leaders, is responsible for the professional development program of the school. The school uses a block program that enables teams of teachers, who share common students, to meet for three hours weekly to discuss case management, the allocation of resources, and the development of interdisciplinary curricula. Monthly faculty meetings are devoted to professional development topics. Mr. Listhaus and this school leadership committee meet weekly to discuss the professional development needs of the faculty.
Mr. Listhaus has taught a variety of high school subjects, including math, biology, world history and English language arts through interdisciplinary units based on the theme of Origins. Through his participation on an interdisciplinary team of teachers, he has collaborated in the design, planning, implementation and assessment of many interdisciplinary projects designed for heterogeneous groups.
Mr. Listhaus is currently developing plans to open a new charter school, The International High School at Hostos Community College, located in The Bronx.
