Dennis Szymkowiak

High School English/Language Arts and Reading Teacher

Dennis and Dan Szymkowiak are brothers who teach at the same high school in Mundelein, Illinois. Dennis is a 19-year veteran English/Language Arts and Reading Teacher. Dan Szymkowiak has been a Math Teacher at the school for 16 years. Together, they have developed a very successful course for students that addresses both English/language arts and math standards, while placing a special emphasis on reading in the curricular areas.

Both have presented at regional, state, and national conventions, and both have done consulting work with area high schools regarding literacy strategies in content area classes (primarily literacy strategies in math classes when they present together).

Dennis holds a BA in English and History (Luther College 1970) and an MA in Reading (Clarke College 1979). He is completing his doctoral dissertation on Reading and Language, focusing on the work of his brother, integrating reading into the math curriculum. Dennis also is Adjunct Instructor of reading methods and content area reading at National-Louis University, Evanston, Illinois. He is the past president of the Illinois Language and Literacy Council and a current committee member of the International Reading Association (IRA) Issues in Literacy Assessment Committee. He is also a consultant for content area reading in the Chicagoland area and co-chair of the Mundelein High School District 120 Reading Across the Curriculum Committee.

Dan holds a BA in math (University of Dubuque 1978) and serves as a member of the Mundelein High School District 120 Reading Across the Curriculum Committee.
