Welcome to a student art exhibit at the Central School, E. Bridgewater, MA. Each work was created independently in a choice-based classroom. Students decide what to exhibit and produce artist statements to accompany their pieces. These artists are eight years old, but the format works well for any age.

Students dictate artist statements to a parent volunteer who visits each class during the month before the art show. Some children explain their process, others talk about subject matter. It is an opportunity for the children to reflect on what they have made and to share insights with the viewers.

The simplicity of some of the art pieces in this show belies the power of work which is planned, not by teachers, but by student artists, who create it independently to express a personal art idea. The images you will see are typical of the variety which emerges from one morning's work in the choice-based classroom.
